After hitting other trails in Germany, the White Horse Theatre Company finally rode again to our school with “The Faceless Ghost” in their saddle bag. Pupils in Years 5-7 were able to watch and take part in this play which dealt with nuclear waste. The story goes something like this: Four children are playing outside and they have a detective agency. The BDS Detectives (Billy, Deidre, and Snuffles) hear someone scream and go to investigate.

Their neighbor is upset because her three pets have mysteriously died. The two children and their dog decide to snoop next door at a big, windowless building. Little do they know, there has been a nuclear waste leak and the Minister of Environment and another worker are trying to cover it up. The children mistake the worker for a “faceless ghost” and… Well, I can’t tell you anymore. But unlike other plays for children, this one leaves one question unanswered: What will happen to the nuclear waste?

Although the fifth year pupils were at a great disadvantage language-wise, they still enjoyed the story and the silly acting. The older pupils could understand more but their interaction was different than the curiousness of the younger students. The English department would like to thank Ms Armbrust for organizing this play for the new learners. We all hope that a greater interest in learning English has been planted in their young minds.
